Abc tv personality dies aged 92

The ABC's Steve Irwin, one of Australia's most famous personalities and one of the oldest TV personalities ever, died from natural causes at his home in Adelaide at the age of 92.


Mr Irwin's death was announced by the ABC today, less than a week after he received a major royal commission into the death of his beloved wife, Mary Ann.


The former ABC and News Corp boss, who retired as an anchor in 1992, was one of Australia's most successful radio and TV personalities in almost 50 years.


He made many appearances on Radio 2's Lateline and has won the ABC Tony and Golden Globes several times over a 45-year period.


He was also named to the ABC Good News Club and the Australian Broadcasting Herald of Australia's Most Promising Young Person Award.


Born in Western Sydney, Mr Irwin had two sisters and five brothers.


His greatest achievement as a radio and television presenter is his role as host of the hit news programme ABC Radio Live on Radio 2 and his later radio broadcasts on Nine.


His final appearance on Nine was in 2010 when he spoke to the nation in front of a studio audience about "the end of the world, climate change and world peace".


"It is with immense sadness I hear of the tragic death of Steve Irwin," ABC CEO Gillian Triggs said at the time of his death.


"In our thoughts we pay tribute to Mr Irwin for his lifetime of great contribution to broadcasting."


Earlier in the day, his daughter MaryAnn, 46, said Mr Irwin was "a wonderful son".


"I'm very lucky that my dad survived for as long as he did. He was kind, polite, kindhearted, intelligent and passionate about his job," she told reporters in Adelaide today.


"He was a terrific guy who loved his country and people. He would have been truly sad to hear the news of his passing."

ABC executive chief Stephen Greenhalgh said at the time of his death Mr Irwin's "inspiration" led him to return to media in his last days.


"We all share the profound sorrow of the whole family, and so we thank the whole staff and all of Steve's colleagues for their unwavering support and concern," he said.


The coroner for Western Australia said Mr Irwin was suffering from advanced kidney disease, but no cause of death was yet known.


The ABC's Dr Richard Biddle said Mr Irwin would be the final host of Lateline on Monday night, with host Andrew Bolt to replace Andrew Bolt.


The BBC News and Current Affairs Correspondent Nick Pope said he was a man of "extraordinary talent and dignity".
